Omega Schools was founded by Ken & Lisa Donkoh and James Tooley as a social enterprise to improve the quality of and extend access to education to low income families at the lowest cost on an unprecedented scale. The company has successfully proven a viable model for starting new schools which are profitable and sustainable on opening. Its embryonic chain of Ten (10) schools located in three districts in the Greater Accra and Central Regions were filled to their capacities on the week of opening. The Omega Schools chain has grown to 10 schools and 6,000 students in 2 years, creating a ‘school-in-a-box’ model that it is now ready to replicate more widely. Reaching financial break-even in 2011 was made possible through, in part, ultra-low overheads and the innovative all-inclusive daily-fee model, which has proven highly attractive to parents: within 10 days of opening, a new Omega School is typically at full capacity, with 500 students, and hence fully sustainable. Our grassroots understanding of the needs of the market coupled with our deep respect and responsibility towards all our stakeholders, including the children, parents and teachers, define our model and the improvements we provide:
An innovative all-inclusive no hidden cost daily fee payment system, ensures that we rope in a lot more lower-income families who otherwise may not be able to afford bulk term fees.
Built in the daily fee is a micro insurance policy which ensures that every child in our schools can complete their schooling even in the event of death or permanent disability of the breadwinner of their family.
A fifteen (15) free school days per year ensures that children are able to attend school on all days including times when their parents may not be able to pay the daily fee.
Our daily fee includes a nutritious hot lunch each day and scheduled mass deworming programmes, ensuring good health and nutrition for all our children.
