Revathi is a school teacher turned organic farmer who has done pioneering work in organic farming and in reclaiming agricultural lands destroyed by natural disasters. She has worked with more than 32000 farmers in the organic movement in TN and her work has been recognized by the governments of India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. Her primary work involves changing the philosophy of farming in many parts of India - by training farming communities to switch from industrial to Eco-friendly sustainable farming. She researches and promotes traditional farming methods and native crop varieties.
Strategies: 1. Revathi has attracted the attention of the farming communities by demonstrating the success of organic farming at local farms. This has, in turn, increased the demand for similar programs across the region. 2. She has started to document results from her studies. These are planned to be published in peer-reviewed journals, providing a sound basis for policy changes. 3. She plans to have a research institute that has the potential to become a strong proponent of the alternate types of farming that is environmentally sound and ensures the income and food security of farmers.
